50 mm or 63.5 mm photo magnets: which size should you choose?
Share
You’ve picked your photos. Now there’s one more choice: which size?
I make photo magnets in two sizes at Remember Yesterday Magnets: 50 mm and 63.5 mm. Both are small enough to become part of everyday life on your fridge, but they give your photos a different amount of room.
Here’s a simple way to choose.
The difference in actual size
A 50 mm magnet measures 5 cm across. A 63.5 mm magnet measures 6.35 cm across.
That’s a difference of 1.35 cm across, which can be hard to picture from the numbers alone. If you’re unsure, mark out both measurements on a piece of paper and hold it against your fridge. It’s a useful way to get a feel for the space each one will take up.
When to choose 50 mm
The 50 mm size is my best seller, and a lovely choice for a collection of little moments.
A close-up of your child. Your dog’s face. A favourite photo of the two of you. Simple photos with a clear subject don’t always need extra room to feel special.
If you like the idea of adding more memories over time, or arranging several photos together without taking over the fridge, this is the size I’d start with.
When to choose 63.5 mm
The 63.5 mm size gives your photo more room.
It’s worth considering for a photo with a little more going on, such as a few people together or a moment where the surroundings matter too. Faces and details can appear larger than they would with the same crop on a 50 mm magnet.
It won’t make a blurry photo sharp, though. A clear original still matters, whichever size you choose.
Think about the photo, not just the size
Before deciding, look at what you want to notice most.
Is it someone’s expression? A tiny hand holding yours? The whole family together?
If your favourite part is already close and clear, either size may suit it. If everyone looks quite small in the original, a closer crop may help more than simply choosing the larger magnet.
Leave a little room around faces and anything important near the edges so there’s flexibility when the photo is fitted.
There isn’t one right answer
The smaller size isn’t less meaningful, and the larger size isn’t automatically the better choice.
Choose the one that suits your photos and how you’d like to see them. A few favourites with more room, or a growing collection of everyday moments.
I print and finish every order by hand here in Melbourne, whether you’re choosing memories for yourself or making something for someone you love.
